Volunteer Opportunities

Stamp Out Hunger Count-a-thon - 3 pm, May 13th, through 9 pm, May 14th, at MARCO Warehouse
Last year, Des Moines area postal workers collected over 83,000 food items for DMARC in just one day.  But it took a month to sort through it all.  This year, we're being pro-active. We need your help to count and sort through all the donated food items in a 30-hour Count-a thon!  Shifts are 2 hours long. We can accommodate groups of 25-30.  The only requirements are the abilities to read and count.  Volunteers under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.  If interested, call or text John Robinson at 515-664-0394 or email him at jrobinson@dmarcunited.org. The MARCO warehouse is located at 4709 121st Street, Urbandale.

Golf Cart Drivers Needed for Annual Conference - June 10th-12th, at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines
Volunteers are needed to drive golf carts transporting people with physical challenges to and from Hy-Vee Hall to the parking lots.  If you, or someone you know, would be willing to help with this important hospitality service, please contact Eldon Nolte, 515-360-3109.  Shifts are approximately 4-hours long.  Thank you!

Weekend Meal Donation for Hawthorn Hill's New Directions Shelter
Hawthorn Hill needs well-balanced, child-friendly weekend (Saturday or Sunday evening) meals for the moms and kids staying at New Directions Shelter. We ask that the meal be prepared for up to 25-30 people (mostly children) and that it be delivered by 4-4:30 pm on the designated day.  We do have the ability to heat/reheat as needed.  Drinks and/or desserts are not required, but you're welcome to bring them if you wish.

Any child-friendly dish is great (sloppy joe's, tacos, hot dogs, burgers, breakfast for dinner, fish/chicken planks, etc.) the only dish discouraged is spaghetti - they get a lot of that!  Feel free to call the Shelter (515-243-7456) prior to your scheduled date to confirm numbers, etc.

There are plentiful dates available on the 2016 meal calendar.  We will do our best to find a convenient date that works for you and/or your group.  Please feel free to call or email Melanie Wright (Monday - Thursday) at 515-244-9748 or melanie@hawthorn-hill.org for further information.  Thank you for your interest in Hawthorn Hill's families!
