8th & College Connections
Put your English skills to work to help immigrants and refugees. If you are flexible, open to new people and experiences, and have language skills you would like to use to help an immigrant or refugee gain the skills needed for success in our community, please consider volunteering with the English Language Learners program of 8th & College Connections, located in Trinity Las Americas UMC at 1548 8th Street in Des Moines. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm and we offer instruction in levels Basic Beginner through Level 4. You will join a class as an assistant and, as you get comfortable, we will probably ask you to substitute. Teaching experience is not needed, but a welcoming spirit is. You will make friends with other volunteers and with your students and you will know that your contribution broadcasts care and compassion to people who really need that more than anything else.
